A “basket” of metal is a decorative element that is used to create various jewelry made by cold forging. To make a “basket” with your own hands, you will need a piece of steel water pipe with a diameter of 15 mm and a length of about 40-50 cm.
The main stages of work
First of all, we clean the pipe section from dirt and rust, then we clamp the workpiece in a vice and in the middle with the help of a grinder we make 6 cuts around the pipe at an equal distance from each other with a length of about 10 cm.
At the next stage of work, we heat the workpiece in the furnace red-hot (at the place where the cuts were made), then we clamp it again in a vice or put it vertically on the anvil, insert a steel rod from a round log with a diameter of 14 mm inside and, striking with a hammer on the pipe end, open it " basket. "
If you do this operation without a steel rod inside, then you will have to spend some time aligning the edges of the "basket", so it’s better to do everything immediately using the technology. After manual processing, the surface of the workpiece must be sanded with an engraver or using angle grinders.
