For the manufacture of cloth polishing wheels, bumazeya, calico, cloth, cotton, tarpaulin, etc. are most often used. But it is preferable to make them from old denim because of its widespread use and properties such as wear resistance, hygroscopicity, non-electrification and other

Will need

In addition to old denim clothes, we will need for work:
  • fabric scissors;
  • old grinding wheel with a mandrel;
  • round pattern approximately 50 mm in diameter;
  • marker;
  • awl;
  • small screwdriver.

Manufacturing process

We have to perform several simple actions that do not require special efforts and skills, but accuracy and patience will be useful in the upcoming work.

1. Making circles

On a denim, spread out on a flat surface, apply at least 10 circles with a template and marker.

Using scissors on the fabric, we carefully cut out the discs from the fabric and, using some simple and affordable method, determine the centers and mark them with a marker.

We string denim circles on the awl according to the marks of the centers and for now temporarily set them aside.

2. Dismantling the old grinding wheel

Using a screwdriver, unscrew the screw at the top of the circle, with which all its parts are connected together. We disassemble the unit - we don’t need the drum and lower washer, but the mandrel is useful for further work.

3. Assembling jeans circles on a mandrel

Cut two washers from thick cardboard in diameter a little more than metal washers. They will serve as additional support and seal during the assembly of jeans discs on the mandrel and their reliable fastening.
We assemble the homemade work in the following sequence: first we put a metal washer on the mandrel, then a cardboard washer, then 10 jeans disks, again a cardboard disk, and finally a metal washer, over which we tightly screw the nut. The polishing disc is, in principle, ready for use for its intended purpose.

Practical use

We fix the lower part of the mandrel with a polishing circle made of jeans fabric at the top in the drill chuck or other tool that provides rotational movement. The best results in polishing can be achieved at medium revolutions of the rotary tool. It is good to polish workpieces and products from metal, glass, plastic, wood, etc. with such a disk of disk fabric.
