In this master class, my ability to make a table with a base of iron pipes will be revealed. I made the table for the first time, and it came out very charming. I hope you enjoy it too.
Necessary materials
To make the table, I used:
Pipes with a diameter of 20 mm: 8 pieces of 15 cm, 4 pieces of 10 cm, 8 bases, 6 T-shaped couplings and one 80 cm pipe.
Still needed:
- Clear nail polish.
- Gray paint.
- Two boards 300 x 15 x 1200 mm.
- 6 mm bolts 16 pcs.
- 3 metal mounting plates.
- 20 short screws.
- Sandpaper with grain from P80 to P220.
- Stain.
- Another brush and gloves.
Base assembly
I assembled a frame that consisted of 4 bases. Two segments of 15 cm were attached to each base, forming one line, with a T-shaped coupling between them. This sleeve included a 10 cm pipe, which ended with another T-shaped sleeve. And this last coupler was supposed to connect to a similar coupler on the other side of the table base. You should get two pairs of legs connected by a large 80 cm pipe. I recommend painting the base of the pipes so that the view is more interesting, but if you do not want to, you can skip this procedure.
Countertop preparation
The next thing to do is to properly process the wood selected for the countertop. I started with P80 grain, gradually moving to P220. After working with each type of sandpaper, wipe the wood dust with a damp towel. All wood polishing will take about two hours, because you want the surface of the countertop to be very smooth. Then, using metal mounting plates, connect the two boards (I did not find one wide enough, so I used two). After they are fastened, make holes in the bottom of the countertop. But, if you do not want to use bolts, then you can use short screws. Next, connect the countertop to the base.
Stain Treatment
Now it's time to get the stain and put it on the countertop. When using a stain, gloves should be worn, otherwise spots may remain on the skin. Immediately after application, excess stain should be removed immediately. If you want the tree to be darker, apply more layers on it, if it is lighter, then two layers will be enough. I was satisfied with three layers.
Varnishing
To give the table a shine, apply a transparent or any other varnish to the countertop. Just make sure you don’t miss anything, otherwise spaces can ruin the look of the table. After that, everything is ready.
Total
My overall impressions of the table remained positive, and I recommend doing something similar for myself. I decided to paint the metal mounting plates so that they do not stand out against the background of the countertop. This table was conceived as a coffee table, but if you want something more, for example, a dining table, you will have to take larger boards and pipes. But the design itself may remain the same. Thanks for reading.
